Northern Negros - We thrilled to share exciting news from Northern Negros Occidental, where Cadiz City has become a safe haven for migratory birds, showcasing its ecological richness and thriving biodiversity.
Spotlight on Black-Headed Gulls
Recently, black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), a species commonly found in Europe and Asia, were spotted in the coastal village of Daga. These sightings highlight the ecological significance of Cadiz’s mudflats, which serve as vital resting spots for migratory birds along their critical flyways.
Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. celebrated this milestone, stating, “This reflects the availability of food, safe resting spots, and a healthy environment that supports diverse bird species in our city.”
A Haven for Rare Avian Visitors
Earlier this year, Sagay City, adjacent to Cadiz, recorded the presence of the rare Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) during the Asian Waterbird Census. This marked the second time the species was spotted in Northern Negros after its first sighting in E.B. Magalona town in 2023. The Avocet species had previously been recorded in the Philippines only once, in Palawan, more than 30 years ago.
