Philippines Celebrates 3 New ASEAN Heritage Parks!

Manila - A momentous achievement for the Philippines – three natural wonders have been officially recognized as ASEAN Heritage Parks, marking a significant milestone in conservation and climate action. This announcement underscores the Philippines' commitment to preserving its natural treasures and combating climate change.

The Newest ASEAN Heritage Parks

Apo Reef Natural Park

  • The largest contiguous coral reef system in the Philippines and the second largest in the world, Apo Reef is a sanctuary for over 482 fish species, 63 coral genera, and iconic marine life like dugongs and whale sharks.

Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Renowned as the only major nesting habitat for Green Sea Turtles in ASEAN and the 11th largest globally, these islands play a pivotal role in conserving this endangered species.

Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park

  • This mountainous haven provides a vital source of clean water while supporting diverse ecosystems and wildlife. It is not only essential for biodiversity but also sustains local livelihoods.

Why This Matters

These parks join the esteemed ranks of the Philippines' 14 ASEAN Heritage Parks, serving as vital sanctuaries for endangered species and climate change mitigation. Coral reefs, mangroves, and wetlands act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide, regulating temperatures, and protecting coastal communities from extreme weather.

A Step Forward in Climate Action

The recognition of these parks aligns with the country’s broader climate goals, such as the National Adaptation Plan and the Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Plan. Sustainable practices, like reducing pollution and overfishing, will be prioritized to enhance the resilience of these ecosystems.

Our Collective Responsibility

This milestone reflects the Philippines' leadership in biodiversity conservation within ASEAN and highlights the importance of local communities, stakeholders, and government agencies in safeguarding these critical ecosystems for future generations.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate the preservation of these treasures that define the beauty and resilience of the Philippines.

Northern Negros: A Sanctuary for Migratory Birds!

Northern Negros - We thrilled to share exciting news from Northern Negros Occidental, where Cadiz City has become a safe haven for migratory birds, showcasing its ecological richness and thriving biodiversity.

Spotlight on Black-Headed Gulls

Recently, black-headed gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), a species commonly found in Europe and Asia, were spotted in the coastal village of Daga. These sightings highlight the ecological significance of Cadiz’s mudflats, which serve as vital resting spots for migratory birds along their critical flyways.

Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. celebrated this milestone, stating, “This reflects the availability of food, safe resting spots, and a healthy environment that supports diverse bird species in our city.”

A Haven for Rare Avian Visitors

Earlier this year, Sagay City, adjacent to Cadiz, recorded the presence of the rare Pied Avocet (Recurvirostra avosetta) during the Asian Waterbird Census. This marked the second time the species was spotted in Northern Negros after its first sighting in E.B. Magalona town in 2023. The Avocet species had previously been recorded in the Philippines only once, in Palawan, more than 30 years ago.

Why This Matters

The presence of these migratory birds underscores the ecological health and biodiversity of Northern Negros’ wetlands. These natural habitats provide essential resources for avian species on their long migratory journeys, contributing to global biodiversity conservation.

How You Can Help

Mayor Escalante encourages everyone to participate in raising awareness about Cadiz City’s role in protecting migratory species. “If you spot these beautiful birds, capture the moment and share it,” he said. Each sighting helps deepen our understanding and appreciation of these incredible avian visitors.

Celebrating Nature's Wonders

This development reinforces the Philippines’ vital role in the conservation of migratory species and their habitats. Let’s celebrate and support these ecological milestones that highlight the rich biodiversity of our country.
