Philippines' natural wonders – the Biri Rock Formation in Northern Samar. This breathtaking landmark is on its way to being recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, a prestigious designation that will help preserve its beauty and significance.

Biri Rock Formation: A Natural Marvel

The Biri Rock Formation, part of the Biri Larosa Protected Landscape and Seascape, is already a protected area under Republic Act No. 11038, the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 2018. This site is renowned for its seven majestic rock formations: Makadlaw, Magasang, Magsapad, Bel-at, and others, which serve as natural barriers against the powerful waves of the Philippine Sea and the San Bernardino Strait.

UNESCO Global Geopark Nomination

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Eastern Visayas is spearheading the campaign to elevate Biri Rock Formation to UNESCO Global Geopark status. This nomination is a significant step towards further protecting and recognizing the geological and cultural importance of the site. The recent visit by UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines Secretary-General Ivan Anthony Henares and other officials underscores the potential of Biri Rock Formation to join Bohol Island as the country's second UNESCO Global Geopark.

Geological Significance

The Biri Rock Formations hold international geological significance, with studies suggesting their origins date back to the Early Miocene epoch, about 15-20 million years ago. The formations are part of the "Biri Volcanic Complex" and showcase stunning natural architecture that attracts both scientists and tourists.

Sustainable Development and Education

Achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status would not only provide enhanced protection but also promote education and sustainable development. It would ensure that the Biri Rock Formation is managed with a holistic approach, balancing conservation efforts with educational initiatives and sustainable tourism practices.

Visit Biri Rock Formation

Located in the island town of Biri, this natural wonder can be accessed by an hour-long motorboat ride from the port of Lavezares town. The journey itself offers scenic views and the chance to experience the serene beauty of the region.

Take Away

The nomination of Biri Rock Formation as a UNESCO Global Geopark is a monumental step towards preserving the Philippines' natural heritage. This recognition will highlight the unique geological features of the site and promote sustainable tourism, ensuring that future generations can enjoy its beauty and learn from its rich history.
