The Pulse: Preserving Heritage - Restoration of General Aniceto Lacson's Ancestral House in Negros Occidental

National Museum of the Philippines - In honor of the Negrense heritage and the 126th anniversary of the Negrenses' revolt against Spanish rule, we’re excited to share news of a historical preservation milestone. The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) has officially taken on the full restoration of the ancestral house of General Aniceto Lacson, a prominent revolutionary hero and the first and only president of the short-lived Republica Cantonal de Negros. Located in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, this 144-year-old mansion stands as a vital part of the region's heritage.

A Tribute to Negrense History

  • The Lacson ancestral house is not just a residence but a symbol of freedom and governance in Negros. After the Al Cinco de Noviembre revolution led by General Lacson and General Juan Araneta, the Republica Cantonal de Negros was formed, with this mansion serving as the official presidential residence. Built in the 19th century in the Spanish-colonial floral style, the home’s architecture boasts intricate details, including a grand staircase made of tindaloo wood, stylized dragon motifs, and a unique wrap-around balcony accessible through 14 double-door openings.

A Commitment to Heritage and Cultural Pride

  • The donation of this historic landmark to the NMP by the heirs of General Lacson marks a major commitment to preserving Negrense culture. NMP Director Ma. Cecilia Tirol highlighted this restoration as a monumental step, allowing future generations to appreciate this emblem of Negrense pride and the architectural beauty that connects them to their roots.

  • "We are the stewards of this heritage,” said Anna Balcells, representing the Lacson heirs. This restoration is more than an architectural endeavor; it’s a celebration of Negrense history, a deep respect for the region’s struggle for independence, and a testament to the unity of the Negrense people.

The restoration project promises to revive the mansion’s legacy, keeping alive the spirit of Negrense identity and pride. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring initiative as we follow the journey to restore and preserve this beautiful landmark.
