The Pulse: Philippines Expands Cruise Tourism with New Ports and Emerging Destinations!

Department of Tourism (DOT) - To transform the Philippines into a premier cruise destination in Asia! With upgraded ports and new emerging destinations, the Philippines is set to provide exceptional and seamless experiences for cruise travelers.

New Ports and Emerging Destinations

The DOT, in collaboration with the Department of Transportation, is enhancing port facilities across popular destinations like Siargao, Coron, and Boracay, with plans to accommodate cruise ships with improved passenger services. This year, the country expects at least 109 cruise calls spanning over 40 diverse and stunning destinations, including new stops like Ticao Island and Culion. Each of these locations showcases the Philippines' unique landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality.

Cruise Lines Taking Notice

During Seatrade Cruise Asia held in Taguig City, top cruise executives shared their enthusiasm for the Philippines' growth potential as a cruise destination. MSC Cruises has committed to further engagement with the region, announcing the opening of a Singapore office to oversee operations in Southeast Asia. Their leadership even hinted at the possibility of a cruise ship being based in the Philippines within the next few years.

Meanwhile, Celebrity Cruises praised the Philippines’ initiatives, including its Cruise Visa Waiver program, for making the country accessible and attractive to international cruise lines.

Positioning the Philippines as a Cruise Hub

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco emphasized the Philippines’ vision of becoming a cruise hub renowned for authentic, immersive experiences that showcase the nation’s rich culture. The DOT's ongoing assessments and the Philippine Ports Authority's (PPA) development of modern facilities will create a safe and unforgettable journey for cruise guests.

“We are working to ensure the Philippines offers seamless, safe, and memorable experiences,” Frasco remarked, with a focus on delivering positive, welcoming experiences as soon as passengers step onto Philippine shores.

As Asia's post-pandemic travel market recovers, the Philippines is emerging as an essential stop on the Asian cruise circuit. With nearly 700 million people in Southeast Asia alone and growing interest in unique cultural experiences, cruise operators see a bright future for the Philippines.
