Undiscovered Philippines: Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary, Masbate

Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary photo by: Bert Adone/Wikimedia

The Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary in Masbate, Philippines, is a mesmerizing destination that showcases the beauty and diversity of marine ecosystems. This hidden gem features a stunningly white sandbar that gracefully stretches across the azure waters, providing a striking contrast to the rich, colorful coral reefs that thrive beneath the surface. As a protected area, it serves as a sanctuary for various marine species, offering exceptional opportunities for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts to explore vibrant underwater life.

How to Get There:

Reaching Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary from Manila involves a combination of air and land travel, and potentially sea travel depending on your choice of route. Here's how to plan your journey:

Option 1: Flight to Masbate

  • Flight from Manila to Masbate: This is the quickest way to reach Masbate. Flights are available from Manila to Moises R. Espinosa Airport in Masbate City. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour. Depending on how early you book and the season, airfares range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 4,000 one-way.

  • From Masbate Airport to Buntod Sandbar: Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a tricycle or a taxi to the city center or directly to the pier. This short ride will cost about PHP 100 to PHP 200. From there, Buntod Sandbar is just a short boat ride away. Boat rentals are available at the pier, and prices vary depending on the number of passengers and negotiation but typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,000 for a round trip.

Option 2: Land and Ferry Travel

  • Bus and Ferry via Pilar, Sorsogon: If you prefer a more scenic route or when flights are not available, you can take a bus from Manila to Pilar, Sorsogon. This overland travel can take about 12 hours and costs approximately PHP 900 to PHP 1,200 one-way.

  • Ferry from Pilar to Masbate: From Pilar, take a ferry to Masbate City. The ferry journey takes about 2 to 3 hours, and the fare ranges from PHP 200 to PHP 400 depending on the ferry class.

  • From Masbate City to Buntod Sandbar: Similar to the air travel route, from the Masbate port, take a short tricycle or taxi ride to the rental boat area for a trip to the sandbar.

Tips for the Trip

  • Book in Advance: Especially for flights and accommodations, to get better rates and ensure availability.

  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance for unexpected delays and protection.

Things You Need to Know

  • Travel Documents: Ensure all your travel documents are updated and in order. This includes valid ID for domestic travel and any required permits or registrations that might be necessary upon arrival.

  • Weather Considerations: The best time to visit the sandbar is during the dry season from December to May, when the sea is calmer and the weather is more predictable. Avoid the rainy season, as rough seas can make boat travel to the sandbar risky.

  • Boat Arrangements: You need to hire a boat to get to the sandbar from Masbate City. It’s advisable to arrange your boat rental in advance, especially during peak travel seasons, to ensure availability. Also, confirm the life jacket supply for safety.

  • Sun Protection: The sandbar offers minimal shade. Bring sunblock, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. Consider light, long-sleeved clothing for additional sun protection.

  • Footwear: Wear comfortable and suitable footwear for walking on sand and possibly wading in shallow waters. Water shoes can be particularly useful.

  • Cash: While Masbate City will have ATMs, carrying some cash is prudent for paying for boat rentals, local guides, and other incidental expenses, as card facilities may not be available everywhere.

  • Local Guides: Engaging a local guide for the boat trips can enhance the experience with insights about marine life and local history.

Attractions Near Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary

  • Rodeo Masbateño: Held annually in April, featuring local cowboys (locally known as 'hacenderos') competing in events such as cattle wrestling, lassoing, and riding. It's a cultural showcase that attracts visitors from across the country and abroad.

  • Ticao Island: Known for its rich marine biodiversity, Ticao Island is a haven for divers and snorkelers. Manta Bowl, a popular dive site near the island, is famous for manta ray sightings. The island's pristine beaches and untouched natural beauty make it a perfect escape for nature lovers.

  • Catandayagan Falls: A stunning waterfall that flows directly into the sea, located off the coast of Ticao Island. It's accessible by boat, and the scenic beauty of the waterfall cascading down from a high cliff into the ocean is truly spectacular.

  • Halea Nature Park: A preserved area on Ticao Island, known for its vibrant coral gardens and diverse marine life. The park is ideal for snorkeling and diving, offering clear waters and a peaceful retreat into nature.

  • Masbate Cathedral: Also known as the Cathedral of San Antonio de Padua, this is one of the oldest churches in Masbate, located in Masbate City. The cathedral is a significant historical and religious site for the locals.

  • Mobo Kalipay Coconut Plantation: Experience rural Filipino life with a visit to this coconut plantation where you can learn about coconut production, enjoy fresh coconut juice, and relax in a peaceful setting.

Travel Smart: Budgeting Your Adventure

  • Environmental and Entrance Fees: There is typically a small environmental or entrance fee charged to access the sanctuary. This fee is used for maintenance and conservation of the area. It's generally around PHP 20 to PHP 50 per person.

  • Boat Rental Fees: To reach the sandbar, you need to rent a boat from Masbate City. The cost of boat rentals can vary based on the size of the group and the season but typically ranges from PHP 500 to PHP 1,000 for a round trip. This can be split among passengers if you're traveling in a group.

  • Guide Fees: While not always mandatory, hiring a local guide can enhance your experience, particularly for activities like snorkeling. Guide fees can vary, so it's best to inquire locally, but expect to pay around PHP 200 to PHP 500, depending on the services provided.

  • Additional Costs: Consider other costs such as snacks, water, and sun protection, which you will need to bring with you as there are no facilities on the sandbar.

  • Accommodation: If staying overnight, accommodation in Masbate City varies from budget to mid-range hotels, generally costing from PHP 1,000 to PHP 3,000 per night.

Pulse: Discover the New Birdwatching Tourism Model in Ilocos Inspired by Taiwan

Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) aimed at enhancing the tourist experience in the Ilocos Region. This initiative, modeled after Taiwan's successful birdwatching tourism in Kaohsiung, is set to transform Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte into premier birdwatching destinations.

DOT Eyes Taiwan Model for Ilocos Birdwatching Tourism

The Department of Tourism is taking significant strides to decentralize tourism activities from popular destinations and highlight lesser-known areas in the Ilocos Region. Birdwatching is one of the emerging niche products that DOT is keen to strengthen, drawing inspiration from the birdwatching model in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

DOT Region 1 (Ilocos) Director Jeff Ortega has highlighted the impressive birdwatching infrastructure in Kaohsiung, noting how the Taiwanese city has created green spaces with wooden decks to enhance the birdwatching experience. This vision is now being adapted for Ilocos, with specific plans to develop similar facilities.

Developing Birdwatching Trails in Ilocos

While the budget for these new facilities is still being finalized, DOT Region 1 is actively partnering with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to identify potential birdwatching areas. Currently, several sites have been classified as "ready" for birdwatching, including:

  • Pangasinan: Bani, Bolinao, and Lingayen

  • La Union: Agoo, Bauang, San Fernando, and San Gabriel

  • Ilocos Norte: Kalbario-Patapat Natural Park in Pagudpud

These locations offer birdwatchers the chance to see a variety of species, such as the flame-breasted fruit-dove, Philippine eagle-owl, and Luzon hornbill, among others.

Expanding Tourism Opportunities in Ilocos

In addition to birdwatching, the DOT is exploring other tourism opportunities in the Ilocos Region, including bike, dive, and cruise tourism. One notable project is the Miraculous Marian Pilgrimage trail, which lists all the miraculous Marian churches in the region, offering a spiritual journey for travelers devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

PHILTOA Board of Trustees member Fe Abling-Yu has expressed optimism about the potential of Ilocos Region's emerging destinations to attract domestic tourists, returning overseas Filipinos, and foreign travelers. The region's connectivity and value-for-money proposition make it an appealing destination.

Conclusion

The DOT’s initiative to enhance birdwatching tourism in Ilocos by adopting Taiwan’s successful model is a significant step towards promoting sustainable and decentralized tourism. We look forward to seeing how these developments will enrich the travel experience in the Ilocos Region.
